I’m in the business of helping people succeed and live their best life. Over the weekend on TED (a forum where experts in various field are invited to share ideas that are worth spreading) , I discovered this video by Amy Cuddy, a Harvard Business School professor who has done research work on prejudice and power dynamics.
One of the greatest discoveries in human history, is the knowledge of the fact that people evolve to be what their most dominant thoughts are. In this 20 mins video, Amy Cuddy talks briefly about power dynamics, describing how people tend to “power pose” when they feel in control of the situations they’re in. However she argues that it is possible to shape our minds (change our psychological and emotional state) by altering our physical appearance for as little as 2 mins, which will eventually change the results we have in life.
It’s a powerful video that I highly recommend that you watch and share. Here are a few quotes from the video:
“Don’t fake it till you make it. Fake it till you become it.”
“When we think of nonverbals, we think of how we judge others. … We tend to forget, though, the other audience that’s influenced by our nonverbals: ourselves.”
“Our bodies change our minds, and our minds can change our behavior, and our behavior can change our outcomes.”
A few after thoughts:
I believe the principle here can be stretched beyond our posture. What if we decided to project the full expression of what it is we desire in life, not only in our body posture, but also in our speech, thinking and attitude? How much will your life differ if you decided to consciously pose daily for success, talk like a successful person, and think like one? It won’t hurt to have a soundtrack playing in your head while you spread out and pose for success (A friend of mine said this and it fits perfectly, and I decided to add it…haha).
Too often we allow ourselves slip into that dark place of negative thinking, which evolves into negative talking, then negative behavior, and we realize we’re in a downward spiral, with the events of our lives replete with multiple failures. But you have the power to change that; consciously change the way you pose, talk and think, it is one of the Power Points for Success!
I know this works, but i’ll like to get some feedback from people who have made small changes and noticed big results. Share with us your own experiences and success stories, drop a comment!
