In the heart of every person is every resource that he or she will need to live life to the fullest. The only difference is what each person has been exposed to. Education is the training of the inner faculties. It is to bring forth from within.
The problem with many people is that they limit their education to what the training they go through within the four walls of their high school or college. A good percentage of people do not read a book once they graduate from college.
There is more to educating yourself than what you learn at college. Our experiences in life go far beyond the medical, engineering, finance or law degree. We have to deal with other people in relationships, conflict, managing processes, organizations risks etc. Training in all of these areas affect where we end up in life. Most important in unlocking your potential is to train yourself in the area of your purpose.
If you desire to live a life that you were created for, a life full of joy and happiness, you must release every potential that exists within you. I’ve said over and over again that success is no accident. Nobody ends up a success in life without making a conscious decision to be one. If you look across the board, successful people are people who are at the top of their career. They are really good at what they do, and the are filled with joy doing what they do.
Recently, I watched the film Flight, starring Denzel Washington. His acting in that movie was so amazing that I had to look up the history of his career. It was clear to me that his success as a film actor was no accident. In light of this, I have learned over the years that if you want to be good, you have to study it thoroughly and practice it diligently.
Identify the ‘why’ for your life. First you have to search your heart for that seed of purpose. Find out what you were created for, because therein lies the full array of what you need to succeed in life. I will stress again that all you really need is an inkling to this purpose, and start where you are at. Many times we’re looking for the big picture, the big story etc. All of that is in the future, and the problem really is not what you don’t have, but it is in how you deal with what you have now. Theodore Roosevelt said it this way, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”
Have a vision for your life. Set a clear goal for where you want to be in life. I have learned that it is difficult, if not impossible to get anywhere worthwhile in life without defining a clear destination. Ask yourself what you need to learn in order for you to do the things you see in the vision for your future.
Make the right choices. Everything you will ever be is partly up to you. You have the power to make choices that will set you on the path to greatness and excellence. Every moment of your day presents you with choices. Choices to invest in your future, or squander today at the expense of tomorrow. A choice to watch a TV show is lost time that could have been used to read a book, or listen to an audio CD to invest in your personal growth. Choose wisely!
Keep learning. You really cannot function effectively beyond the level of information you have. Don’t contribute to the statistics of people who stopped learning after college. Commit yourself to personal growth. Leaders are readers (or learners). There’s a reason why neurosurgeons have to go through the intensity of the training they are subjected to. If you are going to succeed, then you have to learn more to achieve more. Study, and study hard about the various areas related to your purpose in life.
Be diligent. Unlocking your potential requires diligence. Knowledge is no good as long as it remains in your head. Knowledge is only power when applied. I realize that the more I practice something, the better I get at it. As you practice you begin to realize the areas in which there are gaps in your knowledge, and you can revisit the topic to learn more. But never quit because it looks like its not working. The application of knowledge requires persistence and consistency. As you remain diligent. You will realize that results will one day flow like a gusher.
