Learn More To Acheive More

Increase in learning

Books and a computerHistory’s richest and wisest man said, ” Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding…wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her” (Prov.4:7; 8:11). Your relevance and earning ability in life, is largely dependent upon your knowledge skill and your ability to use the knowledge you have to add value in to society. According to a recent report by the U.S. Census Bureau, a college master’s degree is worth $1.3 million more in lifetime earnings than a high school diploma.

Certainly, not all learning is limited to higher college education, however the principle is fundamental. For you to make headway in life, you must commit yourself to being a life long learner. You must always seek to learn more by forming a culture of continuous self development. In your areas of passion and interest read books, attend seminar, listen to teachings of experts, and exposure yourself to the company and materials of people who are making an impact in similar areas of your interest.

Your happiness in life is largely dependent on the degree to which you feel you are in control of your life. You can take charge of your life by increasing in wisdom in the relevant areas of your skills.  By dedicating yourself to enhancing your earning ability, you will continually grow in the area of your purpose, and find yourself better equipped to live the life of purpose that you were created for.

There is a maxim that says leaders are readers. When last did you pick a non-fiction book and finish it? A book represents the author’s ideas, and when you buy a book, you are buying invaluable ideas of years of experience, wisdom, and failure for a few dollars. Maybe $20, an amount we spend on food and it’s done the next day. But the wisdom from a book is able to transform your life and give you the ability to create the things you would have otherwise spent the money on. Okay…I do understand that some books are no good, but my philosophy to reading books is to buy a book on areas that interest me, if I learn one concept, or I gain one valuable idea, then the book has been worth every penny.

Dr. Ben Carson,  in his book, Think Big said his life took a dramatic turn for the best when he began to read books. Certain events in his life had caused him to learn more. He was raised in an extremely poor single parent home, and given the statistics for an African American male in similar conditions, he didn’t have a chance.

As a grade school student, he was considered to be an idiot. He noted he was always first or second in class from behind. His mother however believed in him and didn’t want him to drop out. She worked odd jobs to make sure there was enough to fund his education and provide basic needs. In his book, he noted that his mother said the that the wealthy families she worked for watched little television. Instead, they spent their time reading books. As a result, she banned him and his brother from watching television and insisted that they read two library books a week.

As he read, he began to notice that his intellectual abilities increased. He became more ambitious and convinced that he could make it in life. He saw the possibility of opportunities for him. Now he is a world-renowned Professor of Neurosurgery, Oncology, Plastic Surgery, and Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University who has received many awards and accolades for his work.

So what commitment to increased learning are you going to make today?

I firmly believe in “Garbage in, garbage out”. What we put into our minds shapes who we are and how we view the world.
We must be careful what we allow in because it will come out in our actions.

Daily I put God IN because I want God to come out and shine in my life (matt 5:16)
