Patience & Persistence

Persistence of a dreamNothing worthwhile is ever accomplished without persistence and patience. In order for you to be successful, your dreams must translate into work. The vision you have for the fulfillment of your purpose requires a plan of action, and certainly it’s not going to happen over night, so you must be committed to giving it what it takes. The people who succeed in life are those that are willing to do what they don’t feel like doing. They have learned to turn their passion into a discipline, and they do what’s necessary regardless of how they feel.

It is said that success happens when opportunity meets preparation. Many times we tend to get impatient, desiring that the things we desire in life happen at the snap of a finger. However what we need to be doing is committing the effort necessary to perfect our skills and talents. If you are going to really reach your goals in life, sometimes you have to delay gratification. You have to do the tough things instead of the fun thing, and make sacrifices at the expense of pleasurable enjoyment.

Napoleon Hill said, “Persistence is to the character of man as carbon is to steel.” The time spent in forging our strengths and overcoming obstacles help in forming the character required for success.

When I was much younger, in my biology class, we were asked to plant beans. The first day after planting, it looked like nothing happened. Up to the the fourth day, nothing seemed to happen. By the end of the week, there was something springing up from the soil. Thought it was exciting to see some results, I couldn’t imagine how this would ever produce beans. However, countless farmers in times past have worked this principle, and it has worked. What I lacked was patience. The principle is an unfailing one, if I had waited long enough and consistently nurtured the seedling, it will eventually produce the bean seeds.

The success journey is a marathon and not a sprint. Likewise the unfolding of your purpose in life is like growing a seed. It must be nurtured, and cared for consistently. When it looks like nothing is happening, for as long as you stick to your developmental plan, you are sure to see results.

Any goal worth achieving is going to have obstacles in the way. You need to have a long term view. So when difficulties come, you can persevere, knowing that you are going to get past it. Your passion is very important, but you must learn to make the execution of your purpose one that is a discipline. So when obstacles come, you can keep the wheels moving even if you don’t feel like it.

Here are a few quotes on patience and persistence to inspire you:

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated failures. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.” Calvin Coolidge

“The real issue is not talent as an independent element, but talent in relationship to will, desire, and persistence. Talent without these things vanishes and even modest talent with those characteristics grows.” Milton Glaser

“Patience, persistence and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success.” Napoleon Hill
