The freedictionary.com defines persistence as:
1. the quality of persisting; tenacity
2. the act of persisting; continued effort or existence
3. the continuance of an effect after the cause of it has stopped
For many people it is easy to believe and persist when we see a reason to. Take for example, applying for a job. You have a contact in the desired company who is giving you updates that sound good and are encouraging. Despite the fact that you have not been hired, you are still mentally and emotionally comfortable because there is something to look forward to.
But what happens when you get one discouraging response; it’s not necessarily bad, but its not what you expected either. The process begins to drag beyond what you had planned and ever imagined. It is at this point the definition 3 of persistence takes applicable meaning, “the continuance of an effect after the cause of it has stopped persistence of vision”. This definition is followed by an example; “persistence of vision”.
The cause of your actions were the positive responses you were getting, but when those stop, do you quit? As you journey towards the fulfillment of your purpose you need the strength of character to persevere. It takes persistence to continue towards the goal despite what feedback we receive externally. What we see deep within our heart through the eyes of inner vision must be stronger than what we see with our physical eyes.
Character guides our responses to issues we face in life as we work toward success. Our character is who we are and what we do. It is important that we have a foundation of strong character because our responses to life’s issues determine the quality of our results. In this we must never quit
because the “cause” has stopped. We must persistently continue with the “effect”.
I love this quote by Calvin Coolidge, because it capture the essence of this post:
Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.
Don’t make excuses for yourself. Talent is not the problem, even though you have a greater chance of succeeding if you persist in the area of your talent. Your IQ certainly is not the problem because there are many successful people who were told that they were dumb. Don’t blame your lack of education, for as long as you persistently seek to learn more you will succeed.
I also love what the Bible says in Hebrews 10:35-36, “Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise”.
Whatever vision God has planted in your heart, whatever Word from God bears witness with your heart, don’t quit. Persistently pursue to attain to the vision that you see in your heart!
